the Sky Is Not the Limit

As an administrator for one of the largest microstock photo agencies in the world, I see a lot of photographers work, up close and personal. Everyday I’m forced with making the final call on if a photographers images make it into the microstock library or if they’re rejected. You can plan on finding lots of microstock tips and secrets on this blog that help you get more images approved, which leads to more image sales. Here’s my tip for today. Take a look at this photo of a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Did you get a good look at it? Ok, now for the tip. Do not ever .. ever .. ever .. upload a photo like this of the sky to a microstock website!!!! All of the top microstock agencies have plenty of boring cloudscapes and there is no reason to accept anymore. I’m sorry but the truth is, anyone can aim the camera up at the sky and fire off a shot or two .. or two hundred. The odds that your photo of a sky filled with clouds is going to be so amazing that it blows away all the other cloudscapes that are already flooding the industry is a billion to one. That’s if you’re lucky.

Over the years, I have worked behind the scenes for 3 of the top 6 agencies in the world and consulted several of the up and coming agencies. Every single microstock agency had one golden rule in common and that is to automatically reject all cloudscapes and skies. Sometimes a newly hired administrator will let a sky shot slip through but even then it just doesn’t sell.

It’s happening everywhere. There are not enough provisions of food and water and shelter, be it Port-au-Prince, or at the epicenter of Léogâne.
