Cropping in Camera is Bad for Business

There are two ways to crop a photograph. You can do it in the camera when you are composing the shot or you can crop in photoshop later. Sometimes, cropping in the camera is a good idea. When I say good idea what I’m really saying is, it will save you the time of cropping it later. That is honestly the only reason. However, cropping in the camera can actually cause you to lose money in print sales and/or cause you to get bad word of mouth from your clients. Why? Because of aspect ratios.

Working with the Client

Portrait photography is nothing like other types of photography, such as shooting landscapes. In portraiture you are dealing with a living person. A landscape is not constantly moving around or worried about how their hair looks. A landscape doesn’t get nervous or care how long you take to photograph it. A landscape has no emotions at all to be concerned with. It doesn’t care if you have to get out your camera manual in the middle of the shoot or if you ruin the entire shoot. Most importantly, a landscape is not paying you to photograph it. Because of this, you need to be skilled in more than just photography if you want to be successful in portrait photography.
